Overview

Hunza & Nagar Valleys, located in the Gilgit region of Pakistan, are famous around the globe for their magnificent landscapes, rich culture and friendly residents. These two valleys often referred to as heaven on earth enveloped in the grand Himalayas and the Karakoram Mountain ranges.

Every season in this region forms a unique and vibrant color palette. During the Spring season, the entire valleys turn into pink & white blossom flowers, while the Autumn season brings with it a spectrum of colors ranging from orange, gold and red to soothing shades of yellow.

Hunza features various picturesque nature sights like, Baltit & Altit Forts, Attabad Lake, Hussaini Bridge, Passu Cones etc. The 700 years old Baltit Fort, after the recent renovations, has turned into a heritage sight for the visitors, while the Karimabad Bazaar is known for local handicrafts, handmade rugs, shawls and gemstones.

Nestled amongst the peaks of Karakoram mountains, the dazzling Attabad lake was formed in the wake of a natural disaster, after a massive landslide thundered down the sides of Hunza Valley. The stunning turquoise lake is now a popular tourist attraction in the region. Various recreational activities take place on and around the lake, including boating, jet skiing, fishing and camping. A look at the clear blue colors of this stunning lake will make you feel like you are living in a poet’s dream.

Want to experience a hit of adrenaline and test your nerves? Hussaini Suspension Bridge is a must-visit place for you then! This Bridge is known as one of the most dangerous rope bridges in the world, stretching out for 635 feet, and is surely not for the faint-hearted. The brilliant panorama can only be seen complete with the background of cones-shaped mountain Passu Cathederal, or localy known as ‘Tupopdan’.

Another attraction is Borith Lake in Upper Hunza. To reach there, a 4×4 vehicle is required. Here, you can enjoy fishing, swimming in summers, and bird-watching. Not far from it, it is recommended to do a short hike towards Passu Glacier.

Traveling on the remarkable Karakoram Highway, the highest paved international road in the world, is actually an ultimate travel journey. Cut through the Karakoram mountains, it is believed to be 8th World Wonder. Originaly, this was called as “The Silk Route”, mainly used for trading between the countries. Nowadays, it has become a tourist attraction as well.

Towards north, this brings the travellers to the village Sost, which is the last village before border. After, starts the Khunjerab National Park, where one can even spot the mighty Ibex and Markhor on the snow-covered mountains, if lucky. KKH ends at the Pak-China Border, famously known as Khunjerab Pass, which is also a highest country border across the world. If you are a resident of Gilgit-Baltistan and have government-issued domicile, you can actually cross the border and go in to China. Isn’t it fascinating?

A little on the outskirts of Gilgit, there is a splendid valley and ski point Naltar. A lot of tourists head over to the valley for skiing in winters. Apart from that, there are three beautiful lake and a recently discovered waterfall. It is a must visit place and you can also meet a female snow Leopard in the conservatory.

An hour drive from Gilgit towards Hunza, you will arrive in Nagar Valley. The local cuisine here is to die-for. In Thole village, one can taste fresh Chapshoro, a meat-stuffed bread, from the road side vendors. Nagar is also a home of the 27th highest snow-caped Rakaposhi mountain, therefore, Rakaposhi viewpoint is the main tourist attraction along the KKH.

For true experience of the blossom season, S.A.S (Shayar, Askurdas, Sumayr) and Minapin Valleys should be on the bucket-list. Most of the cherries and apricots that you find in South of Pakistan, come from these valleys. Another notable and going-to-be famous in future place is Pissan. The hiking track going up overlooks the scenic valleys of Nagar and Hunza. At the top, there is a natural cricket stadium, and is going to be the highest cricket stadium in the world, with a magnificent Rakaposhi mountain in the back drop. While you are in Nagar and are up to experience some excellent food, do ask for Dawdo (noodles soup) and Ghurkin (meat cooked in traditional stone pots).

When the autumn arrives, there is Hopper Valley in Nagar Khas stands out of all, featuring the true shades of the season. The jewel in the crown of hopper valley is its moving glacier. It is believed that it moves about 4 inches a day. A short hike down can bring you to the edge of the glacier, where one can even try and step on it, under supervision of local guides. Hopper Valley is also the start point of expeditions for the highest alpine Rush Lake.
