Overview

Baltistan Region, in the extreme North of Pakistan, is enriched with resorts, lakes, forts, and the highest cold deserts, all of which together is an epitome of beauty. Skardu is known for its amazing topographical features, and incredibly beautiful weather. It is a major tourist spot, a trekking and expedition hub in Baltistan region of Gilgit Baltistan. It also possesses a landscape of three ranges of famous mountains, Karakoram, Himalayan and Hindukush. The Indus stream running through the locale separates the Karakoram from the Himalayas.

Skardu is located at a distance of 650km from Islamabad, a journey that takes more than 15 hours via road and 1 hour via air. Amid the ground travel, one is welcomed with awe-inspiring streams, springs, and the friendly residents. One of the most famous destinations in Skardu is the Shangrila Resort, built on the banks of Lower Kachura Lake. The heart-shaped Shangrila Lake mirrors the reflection of the snow-capped mountains, old dramatic trees and the red-roofed huts surrounding it. Another one, only a 15 minutes hike far, Upper Kachura Lake is situated amongst the mountains and rocks.

Baltistan region combines the pleasure of exploring the ancient culture with the thrill of trekking through the glacial mountains. One of the famous destinations is the Deosai Plains or Deosai National Park; the world’s second highest plateau having an elevation of 4,114 metres (13,497 ft) above sea level. Deosai plains is considered as one of the most beautiful places in the world as it offers a variety of activities ranging from sightseeing, trekking, fishing, bear-watching to stargazing, and camping. There is a beautiful heart-shaped blue Sheosar Lake at the top, amidst wide plains. Here, one can also witness the mesmerizing view of snow-caped Nana Parbat Mountain. The trip to Deosai Plain requires a special 4×4 vehicle, as it is a total rocky terrain.

The Ghanche District of Baltistan region has some remarkable historical sites, like Chaqchan mosque, meaning the ‘Miraculous Mosque’, is the oldest mosque which marks the era of start of Islam in the region. The design is heavily influenced by the architecture from the Kashmir Valley. This mosque is a must-see for everyone who is interested in history and architecture, and it is only 3.5 hrs drive from Skardu city. The 200 years old Khaplu Palace is another jewel in the crown of Ghanche. Built by the Raja of the region for his family, is now converted and preserved in a museum and a luxury hotel.

A few kilometers out of Khaplu, there situated a small velly across Shyok river. Saling Valley is known for its fresh Trout fish farms and a clear water Sogha Lake.

Shigar Valley is a combination of culture, history, landscape, flora and fauna. Close to Skardu city, this valley starts from the highest cold desert Sarfaranga with beautiful sand dunes under sunset. Numerous sports activities have been launched at the desert recently. Shigar Fort dates back to 17th century, built by its Raja. Also known as ‘The Fort on Rock’ is now converted and preserved as museum and a luxury hotel. Zharba Tso or ‘Blind Lake’ is a panoramic lake on the way to Shigar city, fed by the Indus river and located at the foot of a mountain. Shigar ends at village Askole which also serves as the gateway to the highest mountains, especially K2 mountain.
